Safety & Health Committee Compliance Issues

State Mandated Safety and Health Committees
- A Safety and Health Committee is required by Public Act 93-228, an Act Reforming Workers' Compensation.
- All employers with more than 25 employees, or whose lost time incident rate exceeds the state average must have a safety and health committee.
- The committee must have at least as many employee members as management members.
- Employee members shall be selected by non-managerial employees.
- The committee shall have a chairperson elected by the committee, and that position shall rotate among managerial and non-managerial members.
- Reasonable efforts shall be made to ensure that each major work activity shall be represented on the committee.
- All sites where there are more than 25 employees is required to have a safety and health committee.
- The committee shall meet at least quarterly.
- A list of the members of the committee with their departments shall be kept in a place accessible to all employees.
- A record of attendance and minutes for each meeting shall be kept
- Records shall be kept for 3 years and shall be made available to the Workers' Compensation Commission upon request.
Safety Committee Meetings Must Include:
- Safety inspections: conducted at least quarterly
- Hazard identification/workplace exposure programs
- Accident investigations
- Evaluation of accident and injury prevention programs
- Written agenda for each meeting
- Record of all suggestions and recommendations
- Follow-up procedures for all open safety items
- Assignment of responsibility to correct safety issues
- Members must be trained in their rights responsibilities, and duties as committee members
