Prevent Slips and Falls

February 5, 2009

This winter has been especially challenging for employers trying to prevent employees from injuring themselves due to slippery conditions. Below are some safety tips to help prevent injuries.

  • Ensure your organization has enough sand/salt/ice melting material on hand to treat outside surfaces especially in the morning after a storm or after refreezing at night.

  • Use walk-off mats that extend at least 8 feet from the door to the entrance.

  • Use wet floor/caution signs by the inside entrance.

  • Encourage employees to wear appropriate footwear for the weather conditions. Slip resistant shoes or boots are best. Leather soled shoes, croc style shoes or high heels can be very dangerous.

  • Remind employees not to use shortcuts through un-cleared paths.

  • Encourage employees to take short steps on wet, icy or snowy surfaces to keep their center of balance. Walk slowly and pay attention to the surface. Look for black ice or other slippery patches.

  • Remind employees to report any unsafe condition immediately to their supervisor.
